Before you start

First, name the kind of care.

A broad word can hide a very specific medicine. Start by finding out what is being offered.

What a peptide is

Proteins are built from small parts linked together; a shorter chain of those parts is a peptide.

Insulin is one example, but sharing that word does not make other products safe or lawful.

Get the medicine’s complete name, then ask why it is under consideration.

Kinds of products

FDA, the Food and Drug Administration in the U.S., reviews medicines for specific uses.

Ozempic and Wegovy contain the medicine semaglutide. Mounjaro and Zepbound contain the medicine tirzepatide. These products had U.S. FDA approval when checked in September 2026.

Get the precise product name and ask how it comes: as a tablet, a shot or another form. Ask why it fits your health concern.

A medicine made to order

To compound means to make a medicine to order. A pharmacist or doctor can do this, as can a business that makes medicines and is registered with FDA.

Registration puts the business on an FDA list. Being on that list gives no FDA approval to the business or its medicines.

The September 2026 check confirmed that FDA approval does not cover medicines prepared to order. FDA does not check how well these medicines work, how safe they are or their quality before they go on sale.

FDA says making a drug to order may help when an approved medicine leaves a medical need unmet.

A label meant for research

In the September 2026 check, FDA advised against using unapproved drugs marketed to people despite a label saying “for research only”.

FDA warns that these products could harm the people using them, and their quality is unknown.

A research label does not answer the question of who is responsible for your care.

Words used in peptide care

Peptide. A short string of parts of the kind that form proteins.

Telehealth. A visit using a video connection, a telephone call or messages online, with the people in separate places.

Compounding. Preparing a medicine to order, done by a pharmacist or doctor, or by a business that makes medicines and is registered with FDA.

Prescription. A medicine order from a doctor or someone else licensed to write it, so a pharmacy can supply the medicine.

Some nurses with extra training, called nurse practitioners, can write prescriptions under their state’s rules.
